We called Nico – AKA Newt – for a chat now that he's finished filming on Hollyoaks and moved on to pastures new. Find out what he's getting up to now and hear all about his favourite Hollyoaks moments here!...
How are things going Nico?
Everything's going really well at the moment, I've been put up for a lot of castings, I've been working really hard, and everything's great!
How does it feel to have left Hollyoaks?
It's been sad leaving Hollyoaks because of all the crew and the cast I miss. They're a great bunch of people and it's horrible to leave, but I still see everyone quite regularly. I do the charity football games with all the Hollyoaks boys still. We've got a match coming up in Sheffield on 10 July so I'll see them all again then.
What are you up to now?
I finished a drama series called 'Moving On' quite recently. It will be coming out in October on BBC1. I played a young lad who's gay but is finding it hard to come to terms with and to admit it. He gets bullied for it at school, so it's quite a deep thing, but it was really good to play.
I have also just filmed nine episodes of Doctors where I played an Italian foreign exchange student, so I had to put on an Italian accent! Those episodes will be coming out on 20 September, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that goes down.
I start working on a film tomorrow called 'McQueen' which is about a young gang from the 90s in Manchester. I play one of the lead roles, Sam McQueen, who is a young Jewish lad. I can't really say too much about the film, but it's one to look out for! I'm really excited about doing it, I can't wait.
What are your plans for the future?
I don't know really, I'm just going to see what comes up. I'm auditioning at the moment and hopefully the right thing will come along. I'd love to do films or drama series - something you can get your teeth into. I wouldn't mind doing a bit of theatre as well to be honest, I've never done anything like that before so that would be interesting.
Who will you miss most on set?
That's a tough one! I guess I'd mostly miss Ashley (Darren), Jimmy (Jack) and Jorgie (Theresa). They're all just brilliant, and funny on set.
What was your favourite storyline while playing Newt?
I'd say it would have to be the scenes at the warehouse with Rae where I had to do the stunt where Newt jumps into the water trying to kill himself. I'd never done anything like that before and it was quite a big challenge, I really enjoyed that. It was really exciting doing that and I'd like to do more of that in the future.
If you could choose, what type of character would you like to play in your next acting role?
I'd like to play a comedy character - something like Jim Carey in Liar Liar. I've never had the chance to do any comedy acting, so I'd love to try and go for that.
Obviously there will be a lot of tears when Newt decides to leave the Hollyoaks village! Do you have a message for all the devoted Newt fans?
I guess I just want to say thank you so much for all your support, it's been very much appreciated. I hope you've enjoyed all Newt's antics and storylines in Hollyoaks - and keep watching it!
