LIVERPOOL actor Barry Sloane is set to tread the boards in New York.

The former Hollyoaks star is off to the Big Apple to appear alongside The Office actor Mackenzie Crook.

Garston-born Barry, who played psychotic Niall Rafferty in the teen soap, landed the theatre role in Jerusalem last year.

The Jez Butterworth play was watched by top American stars, including Dustin Hoffman and Ben Stiller, during its run in London.

Barry and Pirates Of The Caribbean actor Mackenzie are among the actors who are taking the show to Broadway.

The 29-year-old, who plays bearded country hardman Troy Whitworth, said: “It has just snowballed. We had no idea it was going to be this big because it was a new play so you are taking a chance, but it was at the Royal Court and they do not put on rubbish.

“We had people like Jay-Z, Lily Allen, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders and both the new and old Doctor Who coming to watch the play.

“It has been phenomenal. There were people camping outside the night before to get tickets.

“We heard rumours throughout the run that if it did well in the West End it would go to New York.

“Jez Butterworth has written a lot of plays which were transferred to New York.
But it was only about six weeks before the end of its run that we found out we are going to New York.

“They want to take all the cast because we are the only people to have played those parts.”

The former Brookside actor will continue to work with Mackenzie, who plays Ginger, the best friend of Johnny Byron (Mark Rylance).

The original run of Jerusalem was at the Royal Court last summer before it moved to London’s Apollo theatre in January until April 24.

Barry, who has a 11-week-old daughter, Gracie Bluebelle, with partner Katy O’Grady, said: “I am really looking forward to going to Broadway. We hope to start rehearsals in February and the play will run for six months.

“You always read about Hollyoaks actors trying to make it in Hollywood so I am glad I am going to New York.

“I will be going with a job and working with actors who are established in Hollywood.

“It is the most exciting job I have had, especially because we have got our lovely daughter Gracie and the job is a success.

“Going to Broadway is going to be amazing. The best thing about it is I can take Katy and the baby with me.”
