No doubt we can expect a fresh batch of rumours linking most of the Anfield first team with the Ajax - Zenit of random fashionable competitors.

Quote:
However, the Liverpool manager is resigned to recruiting only a few additions to his squad. "I will not give any figures [about spending power]," Benitez said. "We do not have too much money, but we have enough money to add one or two players that we need.

How much spending do you think would be required to keep a top four placing given the new money available to Manchester City and Portsmouth, along with established threats like Chelsea and Manchester United?

Some of these teams can feel fairly safe spending £25 million here and £20 million there on untried players in the knowledge that if they prove to be unsuitable for the Premier League they can be replaced with another player valued at similar money, earn a few million turning out for the reserves and then be sold on at a loss.

Access to first team football and a desire not to sit on the bench every game is probably all that stands between many footballers and a willingness to sign for a bigger club. Given the choice between regular football at a mid-table team and the odd outing in the earlier cup rounds at a title-challenger I hope most would choose to play more often.

For all the talk of Real Madrid hoarding talent and artificially inflating transfer values this seems to have been missed. At least two and possibly four Premier League clubs might be about to try the same thing.
