On Tuesday, the Latics made an official approach for Martinez as they prepare for the expected departure of current boss Steve Bruce, who is set to take over at Sunderland.

The Lancashire outfit were, however, knocked back by the Swan's £2million-plus compensation demands for the Spaniard, who spent six years at Wigan as a player.

Can't really blame the Swans for that, but kudos to Wigan for trying to bring in talent from the lower leagues.

He's the Swansea City manager. I don't know any more than that and as his wiki entry doesn't quote any sources I can't comment further  !

Interesting to see how he performs if he does ultimately take over the reins at Wigan, given that the general view (I think) would be that experienced managers are the way to go in the Premiership.

He's a sort of bridge between the long-established (such as Sam Allardyce, Harry Redknapp, Roy Hodgeson, David Moyes) and others with less managerial time in the top league.
